36,000 Chinese evacuees home safely
A total of 36,000 Chinese nationals evacuated from Libya have all returned home, as reported by the Chinese Foreign Ministry. The evacuees either took chartered boats or were on board chartered planes sent by the Chinese government.
From February 22 until March 5 the government organized the evacuation of all Chinese citizens in Libya. This was the largest evacuation of the People’s Republic of China by air, land and sea. The evacuation involved around 91 chartered flights, 12 military flights, five ferries and 35 foreign chartered flights.
Last February 23 the government organized three working groups to the Libyan capital to help with the evacuation of the Chinese nationals. Some of the evacuees arrived by a Greek flagged merchant ship which might be the last chartered liner by the government, also the last group of 149 evacuees on a chartered airline flight arrived in Shanghai Hongqiao Airport last Saturday.
