Owners protest over market demolition
Stall owners at the Xixiang seafood market suspended sales and organized a protest in the market over the market demolition. The owners are hoping that the market management would offer new stalls in other nearby areas after the market will be demolished.
The market department told the stall owners that it would be difficult to find the suitable place for them, right now they are helping them set up new stalls in other markets but it might not be as good as the Xixiang market. The stall owners can either choose to leave when they receive compensation after the demolition. The Xixiang seafood market was one of the biggest produce market that have three areas, a grocery store, a meat and vegetable market, and the seafood market. An environmental improvement project along the Xixiang river that started last year and the seafood market had to be demolished to accommodate the improvement project plan.
The market management department was planning to move the seafood stalls to a place between the market building and the meat and vegetable market but it was disapproved by the residents living in the building. Because of this the department had no choice but to compensate the owners and ask them to leave since there were no place for them to continue their operations.
Most of the stall owners have been in business for more than 30 years in the market, and most of their families are depending on the market. The stall owners said that it would be a problem for them if there will be no place for them to do business. Owners are afraid that the number of buyers will decrease if the seafood market was moved out of the Xixiang market. Meat and vegetable owners also joined the protest in fears of sales decrease.
