Company ordered to stop cutting down trees
A thousand gum trees found in Fenghuang Mountain have been chopped down by a company commissioned to do afforestation work in the mountains. Officials of the district agriculture bureau have ordered the company to stop cutting the trees before their contract expires, when the bureau have already receiving complaints from tourist and residents.
Shenzhen Lubaogui the company had a contract with the government to cut down the trees as their return of investment for their effort to do afforestation, but the company didn’t obtain prior approval from the government to cut down trees. The greening commission said that they require any company to replant trees on the slope where the gum trees had been cut down. According to sources the trees were cut down for profit since the tress were mainly used as a raw materials for paper making.
Gum trees are also known as eucalyptus, and its a fast growing tree and an excellent source of wood. People have a wrong impression that these trees emit toxic gas and deprive soil of water and nourishment. Experts say that this have no scientific basis and they only reason this rumor is being spread so that people can cut down the trees for profit without being penalized.
