English corners set up in various areas near Universiade venuesThe District government have set up thirty English corners in the Longgang District , since it will the Universiade main venues will be held here and the Athletes Village is in Longgang as well. the English corners are located in schools, parks and private companies.

the English corners are for the residents that have a yearning to learn and speak English, and this is one way to strengthen the residents enthusiasm. Each residents is issued a passport and each attendance will merit the resident one seal on their passport. When the residents earns a certain amount of seals they will be rewarded with a Wa-u which is a badge that resembles a frog and in different colors.

400 residents have already participated in the variety of programs in the English corner, and the district will be making a promotional video of the English corner that is expected to be shown in the districts public places. The English corner is also part of the Shenzhen speak program which is the citywide foreign language speaking promotional campaign that was launched last year.

This program will raise the overall level of foreign language ability among its citizens since Shenzhen is striving to become an international city. Besides the English corner program the district government is also replacing and correcting the badly translated signs in public areas. Experts also said that not all of the signs will be translated because some of the signs only make sense to Chinese people.
