Language Learning and the Internet
As a teacher of languages and writing skills, I am always on the look out for sites on the Internet that not only support the English language learners but also help all students to expand their English. There are many sites out there on the World Wide Web that offer great support for language learners as well as native speakers. Many of these sites have also been developed to prepare students for different academic language examinations.
In my article today, I want to take advantage of the opportunity to introduce a selection of some of my favorite language and writing support sites. First of all, there are the sites that extend language by introducing and giving the opportunity to practice vocabulary. Many of them are not only of interest to English language learners, but they are also wonderful sites that assist students in their preparation for the SAT and other college level exams.
In addition to these sites, there are reading sites that help students to access texts, websites, and newspaper articles in a great variety of languages. And lastly, I will introduce you to the writing site of Purdue University. Writing is often challenging, especially when it comes to academic and scientific writing. Purdue’s writing site – OWL – offers answers to all research, writing, grammar and reference questions anyone might have.
Vocabulary Development and Extension
These web sites are great vocabulary builders that help students to improve their reading comprehension and writing skills. Many have visuals, videos and recordings that assist language acquisition.
English Reading Sites
These sites have reading materials to help develop English language skills. ‘English-online’ offers subject area specific readings that assist students to prepare for a particular class and topic. These texts are accompanied by vocabulary builders and comprehension exercises.
Word Champ – Foreign Languages
A great site for learners of a foreign language. The settings can be changed to support your own first language (most World Languages are available) and any other language you chose. The ‘learn a language’ box offers a feature that helps the comprehension of newspaper articles and web-sites by translating words that are unfamiliar. This is a great site for all learners of a World Language.
Writing – Purdue University
Purdue’s writing site offers invaluable help and clarifies many questions a writer might have. Among others, there is an MLA references section, an academic and creative writing section and a grammar and writing conventions section.
I hope these sites will prove helpful and become great tools for parents and students alike. Keep in mind that there are many more very helpful and informative sites on the web, so have fun exploring and discovering!
