Bright objects hypnotize the mind
From “A Word with You” by Elizabeth Bishop
With inspiration from last month’s Poetry Alive! presentations SIS is definitely ready to celebrate Poetry Month 2011! Since 1996, April has become the month around the world to recognize poets and poetry. SIS will join the celebration in a variety of ways. There will be poetry discussions, performances, readings, and writing competitions throughout the entire school. Two events of note are “poem in your pocket day” and our very own poetry writing competition.
On April 12 expect to hear poetry out loud in the hallways, classrooms and pretty much everywhere on campus! This is “poem in your pocket day” when students and staff alike will carry a favourite poem in their pocket and, when asked, will share their poems spontaneously throughout the day.
The Poet’s Cup, a poetry writing competition offered to middle and high school students for the first time last year, will be extended to the elementary school. Watch for details.
If you are interested in learning more about Poetry Month check out the information, readings, and general poetry resources at the Academy of American Poets.
Here’s to another fabulous SIS poetry celebration! Brought to you by the SIS Libraries.
