Join us for an exciting lecture series that we hope covers what you
have always wanted to know about Buddhism and its relevence in China.

The talk will be given by James Baquet, who you might recognise from
his weekly column on travel in the Shenzhen Daily. He studied Buddhism
at a Chinese Buddhist university in California, worked in temples in
America and China, and is in the process of visiting China’s 142 Key
Buddhist Temples.

From 1997 to 2001 James lived in Japan, where he completed four major
pilgrimages (totaling 188 temples) and earned himself the title “The
Temple Guy.” He has visited over a thousand temples (Buddhist, Hindu,
Taoist, and folk), Shinto shrines, and historic Catholic churches in
seven countries (plus Hong Kong and Macau).
In his other life, he’s an English teacher with over 30 years of experience.

Schedule:
The evenings will commence with registration at 18:30, where you will
have the chance to sample some delicious Buddhist vegetarian snacks
and soft drinks. The lectures will start at 19:00 until 20:00 with
plenty of time for your questions and discussions after the main
presentation.

Temple Visit in Shiyan:
We will visit Hongyuan temple, a small, working temple in a quiet
setting, away from the crowded city. It is rare to meet any other
visitor in a temple such as this. The monks here are quite accessible
and the halls are peaceful.
Although an ambitious building program has already been started, this
temple still hasn’t lost it’s charming, small-temple character. See it
while you can!
After the visit we will have the once in a life time opportunity to
join the lunch time ritual with the Buddhist monks. Please prepare
yourself for a simple meal and note that silence should be observed
during the meal.

Schedule:
9:00 Depart Shekou -> Transport to temple
10:00 Temple tour guided by James
11.30 Lunch with the monks
Estimated return to Shekou -12 midday

For registration or any other information, please contact Susanne:
