New Penalties for Drunk Drivers
Drivers driving under the influence of alcohol will face from one to six months imprisonment and have their licensed revoked, having to wait five years to reapply for a new license, according to an amendment to China’s Road Safety Management.
As stated by law, drivers with a blood-alcohol content of between 20-80 mg/100 ml is under the influence of alcohol while 80 milligrams per 100 milliliters are considered drunk. The new rule states that drunk driving is a criminal offense. Drivers driving under the influence but not drunk will be charged with a six month suspension of their license and a fine of 1,000 yuan (US$153) to 2,000 yuan. If caught for the second time, they would be detained for 15 days said Xu Wei, Shenzhen traffic police spokesman.
