New Law Makes Drunk Driving a Criminal Offense

New law makes drunk driving into a criminal offenseFive drivers were detained and will be facing jail terms of up to six months, after the Road Traffic Safety Law made an amendment that made drunk driving into a criminal offense.

One driver was charged with drunk driving and hit and run when his vehicle rammed into another car on Nanhua road in Bao’an district. The driver didn’t apologize for the accident instead he assaulted the other driver and sped away. A pedestrian who witnessed the accident was able to help the fallen driver and reported the incident to the police. The police caught up with the driver when he was found asleep in his car that was found parked near Xinsha road.

The driver refused to undergo a Breathalyzer test instead was forced to do a blood test. According to the chief of investigation the drivers are currently out on bail and not allowed to leave Shenzhen without any approval. Also under the new ruling the drivers will have their licensed cancelled for five years.

Beijing police also arrested a driver from Inner Mongolia for driving under the influence of alcohol and he became the first person to be charged with the criminal offense. The Ministry of Public Safety also reported that during the May Day holidays a number of accidents caused by drunk driving were greatly reduced.
