Bloggers starts Universiade games virtual torch relay
More than 210,000 people joined the virtual torch relay for the Universiade games. The national wide virtual relay was started by a microblog on May 4 and is operated by China’s biggest Internet company Tencent.
Majority of people that joined the virtual torchbearers microblog were residents from Guangdong province. They logged on to the site, posted microblog the invited friends to do the same. People from different part of the country ranging from Beijing to Jiangsu province also joined the virtual relay along with local celebrities.
Fan Ye, a world champion gymnast hopes that the Universiade games can create public awareness of a students physical qualities. Coco Lee, a Chinese pop star also called for awareness to those interested in joining the online torch relay. Lee was invited to sing at the opening ceremony of the 2003.
The social networking site operated by Tencent will also do a relay the will cover around 800 universities, the students that will be participating will be using their real names and the ten most active torch relay bearers will be invited to join the opening ceremony on August 12. The games organizing committee chose to do a virtual torch relay that covers 50 universities to join the cities effort in making the games cost efficient.
The relay started at Beijing University and is scheduled to continue to Shenzhen university then to Guangzhou University. Then on August 10 and 11 the relay will start again in Shenzhen and will cover most of the downtown area and Longgang district, which is the home of the Athletes Village and Universiade Center.
