Families in disaster prone areas to be relocatedAuthorities will relocate a quarter of a million people living in disaster prone areas in the northwestern China to new homes.  The first stage will involve moving around 240,000 people.

The ten-year project is set to move 2.4 million people away from less developed mountain areas in the Shaanxi Province.  This total amount surpasses the 1.4 million people that were relocated during the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, which the worlds biggest hydroelectric power plant. The project will include those living in the cities of Hanzhong, Ankang and Shangluo in the south province.

Resident in the Shaanxi areas always suffers from disasters like flooding and landslides. Last year a rain triggered a landslide that killed 300 people. The relocated families will be give new homes by the government, or will be allowed to build it themselves.

Each family will get a subsidy of 30,000 yuan, the poorest families will get an additional 10,000 yuan. The relocation plans is going to cost the government 110 billion yuan.
