New Energy Vehicles Lack Appeal to Car Buyers
A lot of car buyers are not into buying new energy vehicles, even with the government heavily promoting these vehicles. Since the government offered a subsidy for those who buy the cars since July last year.
Only 535 people availed of the subsidy and are using the new energy vehicles for private use. People said that the government offered subsidy was done prematurely since there were not enough charging stations being built to facilitate charging electric vehicles.
An official of BYD the pioneering developer of new energy vehicles in China said that the company would be placing greater importance in promoting the use of electric buses in the future. With the Universiade fast approaching, developing electric buses has been the first choice for a lot of companies.
As of now there are 760 hybrid buses and 50 electric taxis currently operating in the city, and the government is setting up a 2 billion yuan funding to subsidize the new energy buses and taxis and the construction of recharging stations. People are having second thoughts in purchasing new energy vehicles because only a few models are being offered subsidies by the government, long waiting times and insufficient charging stations.
By 2012 the city will be building 200 recharging stations and will also install around 30,000 recharging stands.
