Drivers Complaining of High Fuel Surcharge
Passengers and taxi drivers all agree that they are being hit hard by the fuel surcharge increase in red taxis. Passengers say that it increases their costs in traveling and taxi drivers are complaining of reduced income.
Passengers are also complaining that they should not pay for increase in the fuel prices as taxis are public vehicles that the government and taxi companies should bear the costs of. Passengers also said that the surcharge for short and long distance travel should not be the same. Right now the surcharge is set at three yuan.
Visitors were also complaining that the surcharge is high and its becoming expensive to take the taxi in Shenzhen. One visitor said he paid 35 yuan taxi fare from the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center to Honggui Hotel, he said it was expensive. A taxi price in Shenzhen is already similar with Hong Kong and Hong Kong doesn’t have any fuel surcharge.
Taxi drivers are not happy with the increase, even with a one yuan surcharge is already a burden since the fuel for one day costs 400 yuan. Taxi drivers also losing passengers since more are choosing to ride buses and metro lines. Taxi drivers said its better to reduce management fees rather than increasing fuel surcharge, this way they can earn more and it won’t be a burden to then and their passengers.
