Checkpoint to Open Automated Lanes to Mainland Travelers
The Immigration department will also help the Ministry of Public Security in issuing new w-passports that allows mainland travelers to enter Hong Kong through their e-channels by next year when the system is upgraded in all Hong Kong Checkpoints.
Mainland travelers can only use the e-channels in checkpoints at the Shenzhen side only after they have registered their personal information and had their fingerprints scanned at the checkpoints. The checkpoints in Guangdong province will be the first to try out the new e-channels with an estimated 100,000 mainland travelers to line up for fast clearances. Starting in 2012 the Ministry of Public Security will issue w-passports that have the traveler’s information and Hong Kong visas to all mainland travelers. Their photograph and fingerprints are recorded in the passports.
Checkpoints in Shenzhen and Hong Kong will expect a rise in travelers using the e-channels after the new visas take effect next year.
