SIS Chess Club
Saturday, April 23rd nine SIS middle school students participated in the first annual chess tournament at QSI. Students began practicing during their lunch times on Days 2 and 7. The week before the tournament, the gentlemen practiced during their lunchtime every day.
Joon Choi, Jong Hyun Kim, Sean Kim, BJ Ko, Andrew Leung, Brigham Lynesco, Kevin Tran, and Marvyn Uy attended. Each student played five rounds of 15 minutes each of round robin play before playing seeded matches.
Breaks in-between rounds were used to clarify rules and use teachable moments to further improve the student’s skills. All students received snacks throughout the day and had lunch. During the breaks and lunch students continued to play matches for fun, socialized, and strategized.
Joon, Jong Huyn, and Ji Ho placed in their divisions. Andrew Leung not only won his division but beat all winners from other divisions without losing a single match.
