The Xinzhou River was getting cleaned because of efforts done by environmental measures, but after the storm the river turned into slurry. Heavy rains also caused some of the main roads near the river turned yellow and dirty.
Storm water was drained from a construction site into the Xinzhou River in Futian District, turning the water yellow and dirty. The construction site said that their area is equipped with desiting facilities but it was not enough to fully drain the water. Engineers of the construction site said that they were aware of the soil and sand in the water and they desilted it before discharging, but because there was too much water they had no choice but to release some water without processing it.
According to the city water resources bureau, it’s common for construction sites to secretly dump contaminated soil and sand water into rivers and drainage pipes . That is why the city imposes fines on construction sites that are caught dumping water. An official from the bureau said that is dangerous for sand to be dumped into public drainages for it might cause blockage causing floods in the city after heavy rains.
