Courier Companies to Resort to Other Means of Delivery
A big challenge will be facing couriers when the ban on electric bikes will be implemented starting next week. Ninety percent of the city’s couriers rely on electric bikes as their primary mode of transportation.
Electric bikes are to be banned throughout the city except in Guangming and Pingshan. Violators will be subjected to a 200 yuan fine if caught using the bikes. Courier companies have already addressed the problems by getting small vans for their couriers and opening more dropping stations others have just chosen to pay the fines. Couriers say that they collect and deliver parcels in the morning. A electric bike is the cheapest way of transporting parcels and a fully charged bike can go for three days.
Operators are afraid that using push bicycles will tire out their couriers and reduce delivery efficiency, since they are restricted from major roads. One postal industry spokesman said that they might ask customers to go to their dropping stations to either drop and collect their parcels.
