Grade One Explores Nonfiction
During trimester three the grade one students studied plants and animals and the genre of nonfiction. After learning the conventions of nonfiction and how to extract information from a text, each student chose a plant or animal to research. The students located resources about their plant or animal, including books and websites. They used these resources to find facts related to habitat, physical characteristics, diet, and life cycle.
Using the facts gathered during research, the students created their own nonfiction book. To provide the students with an authentic audience, we invited the grade six students to come and listen to our nonfiction books. With their audience in mind, the students wrote a draft, revised for details, edited for capitals and punctuation, and published their book.
On Monday, June 6th, the grade six students came to Mountainside to learn about the animals and plants the grade one students researched. Everyone was very excited to teach the grade six students what they had learned about their plant or animal.
