Chengdu Social Rugby 7’s – Beer, girls, rugby and more beer!
The Chengdu Pandas hosted their annual social rugby event at the weekend and put on a fantastic festival of rugby and drinking games. Teams entered from Chongxing, Beijing, Chengdu and guest appearances by players from Shenzhen(for the drinking games only), Tsingtao and Macau. The weekend started with a light gathering at the Shamrock Irish bar on Friday evening. As expected with Mr Donegan in attendance Whisky and Guinness were flowing freely. There were a coupled of first night causalities with one girl passing out and Pete throwing his ring up all over the flowers.
Saturday started with full English breakfasts in the Shamrock with the Beijing girls showing the guys how to eat scoffing plates full of bacon and sausages, not really the perfect pre-game meal but delicious none the less. The rugby kicked off in the mid-day heat with the Chongxing guys showing the way with comprehensive victories over the Chengdu young boys and the BaBas followed by a closer game with the vets.
In the ladies section the Chinese national team were in attendance and looked to be walking away with it with early victories only for the Beijing girls to nick a late win, still the national team were worthy tournament winners and carried away the trophy.
In the evening we had a lovely meal followed by fines for players meaning they had to down pints of beer. Then back to the Shamrock for the boat races and dance offs on the pole!
A great night and I can’t finish before I give a mention to the Bookworm bar/café, possibly the coolest bar I have been to in China. Owner Pete had his team cooked up fantastic breakfasts on Sunday morning and they served up the best Bloody Mary’s I have ever tasted.
I certainly recommend a trip to Chengdu for the social 7’s next year, flights from Shenzhen are as little as 1600rmb for a return ticket and the hotel was only 175rmb per night.
