Old Chinese performance gains younger audience

Old Chinese performance gains younger audienceChinese youth have mainly college students and white collar workers have start to discover a more traditional Chinese pastime instead of watching movies during their free time.

These students and workers together started to perform and study the century old art of Kunqu. The Kunqu is a form of Chinese opera originated in the Ming Dynasty way back 14th century. The Kunqu is characterized by its combination of musical performances and choreographed routine. Nowadays more younger generations are preferring to listen to Kunqu and practicing yoga since it’s more fashionable among them.

During 1990s, Kunqu almost disappeared when they started to lose the interest of the people and there were no new plays and performance shown to the public. Also during this time is was mostly popular with the older residents. In 2001 the Kunqu Opera was added to the UNESCO Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity list as a way to let the art form get recognized again.
