Drivers Warned on Driving Below the Speed Limit
Motorists beware, driving at speeds below 60 kilometers per hour on Shenzhen expressways and trunk roads might result in a fine of 500 yuan for each offense. A driver that commits the offense five times in one year will have their license suspended.
This is the first regulation implemented that will punish drivers that are driving at low speeds. Traffic police hope that this regulation can curb accidents caused by vehicles driving at low speeds, especially on expressways. Driving at these speeds causes a lot of accidents, since slow-moving vehicles obstruct other vehicles and chances are higher at night when a driver’s vision is not good that an accident will occur.
Accidents occur when truck drivers occupy the fast lanes at night. Police will be using speed detectors to check the speed of oncoming cars, and mobile vehicles will be parked in strategic locations to check for violations. The speed detectors will be turned on from midnight until 6 am. Traffic police will set the speed limit on the roads at 60 to 120 km an hour.
Detectors have already been installed at Jihe Expressway, Nanguang Expressway and the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway.
