Happy fourth of July from White Horse Laboratories
It has been many years since I’ve been home for the 4th of July holiday, and the memories that always stand out are the parades before the fireworks. I’m not sure if there even are parades anymore, but what I remember are all of the people dressed in era costumes.
The costumes and reinactments were not a remembrance of the Revolutionary War or any battles, but rather a celebration of the courage it took to take a stand for an ideal. It is an amazingly worded document that was created in the darkness of secretive meetings but not of doubt, and certainly captured the essence of the ideal.
Your personal interpretation may be political, theoretical, simply historical, or something entirely different. When I read it, particularly the opening paragraphs (the later ones are a bit dated to that era), it means simply that there comes a time when you have to make a stand, or as in a more recent lyric, “you have to stand for something or you’ll fall for anything”.
For all of you celebrating this holiday, have a very happy and safe 4th of July with friends and loved ones. You’ve worked all year upholding your ideals, you’ve earned a day off to celebrate them.
