Sports Center to Open Doors to the Public
Shenzhen Bay Sports Center will open its doors to the public in September. The center covers an area of around 330,000 square meters and will become a major venue for fitness activities in Nanshan District.
Also known as the Spring Cocoon, the center cost 2 billion yuan to build and has facilities like swimming pools, gymnasiums, tennis courts, basketball courts, badminton courts and football pitches, in addition to other sports facilities that will be constructed around the sports center.
From September until December, 20 events are scheduled to be held in the center ranging from large commercial events featuring cultural performances to exhibitions. On average there will be an event each week and the number of people that will be visiting the venue is expected to increase.
The Sports center is like the Bird’s Nest in Beijing which is a build to operate transfer model in which the company that is responsible for constructing the sports center will hold a 50 year franchise on the building then ownership will be transferred to the city government after the franchise expires. This will be the first time the city allows a company to operate with such a large venue.
The rest of the space that surrounds the sports facilities will be leased out to various businesses that could be used in music festivals and expos.
