More People are Choosing Metro as Primary Form of Transportation
A week since the new metro line extensions opened, the number of commuters has increased by 100,000 a day. Passengers taking the Metro reached an average of 1.56 million passengers a day, which is nearly three times the daily average of 590,000 passengers.
Metro officials are estimating that passengers will reach 2 million by September. The Luobao line starting from Shenzhen Railway Station going to the airport carries half of the total number of passengers. Shekou line passengers increased to 216,400, seven times higher than the usual number of passengers in a day, and trains are packed during rush hours.
Because of this the ever increasing amount of passengers taking the Metro, vehicles on the roads have been gradually reduced and made buses more efficient in running their routes. The Metro is planning to shorten train intervals in the coming weeks to control the increasing amount of passengers taking the trains. Intervals at stations will be reduced to between 5 and 10 minutes apart.
