Police to Issue Warnings to Electric Bicycle Users
The rule to fine electric bicycle riders that enter restricted areas has been put on hold by the traffic police after objections were heard from the public and industries that benefit from the use of the bikes.
Police will instead issue warnings to those electric bicycle riders caught entering restricted areas. Police will be reminding them that they are only allowed in the Guangming and Pingshan new zones and four subdistricts in Longgang.
Before violators caught were issued fines of 200 yuan as these restrictions were imposed to curb the increasing number of accidents caused by undisciplined riders in recent years. However, due to recent objections from the public, the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Congress is drafting a new rule that will cover the use of these bicycles and how the police will deal with the offenders.
the ruling that restricts the use of electric bicycles were highly contested since it was released a month ago, with most residents saying that the police should be tougher on people they caught speeding, running red lights or illegal uses rather that banning them completely.
The ban would affect 500,000 riders, courier companies and logistics services. The drafted regulation is set to be released in August, in the meantime police will be tough on the offenders caught running red lights, parking illegally and speeding.
