Xu said, that there will not be fireworks or celebrity appearances during the opening ceremony of the Universiade that is themed “the return of sports.” Organizers also pointed out that the stage constructed for the ceremony was made out of recycled plastic bottles, and around 65 percent in the event’s venues were remodeled or based on existing facilities to save costs and reduce any impact on the environment.
New energy-saving technology and materials were also used in the Universiade Center and Athletes Village in Longgang. The approach of being an environmentally friendly city will not only be for the benefit the Universiade but the city as well since the government will be utilizing alternative energy vehicles in the city during the 12-day sporting event.
