Higher costs pushed moon cakes prices up to ten percent
Prices for moon cakes have risen to ten percent due to increases in the prices of the ingredients needed to make moon cakes. Also this year fewer additives were allowed to be placed in the moon cakes because of newly imposed national regulations.
Prices for a 180 gram moon cake depends on what type of filling was placed in the moon cake and usually ranges from 7 yuan to 18 yuan. A moon cake that comes with a gift box was priced between 100 to 300 yuan. At Shenzhen Kejilong Food Co. prices for their moon cakes was ten percent higher than last year, saying that they had to raise their prices because the cost of sugar, flour and lotus seed paste have increase.
Even with the new prices for moon cakes, buyers are assured that the quality is better since a new regulation was released that regulated the number of additives that were allowed in the moon cake. Forbidden to be added to moon cake are calcium peroxide and ammonium sulfate that is used to whiten the flour, the use of coloring and preservatives were also limited.
The control use of additives also shortens the shelf life of the moon cakes to 45 days to two months, unlike before when moon cakes had a shelf life of six months.
