Incoming Tropical Storm to Bring Cooler Weather
An incoming tropical storm will bring slight relief to the hot weather the city has been experiencing . The tropical storm Nock-ten will make landfall in western Guangdong and Hainan by Friday. This storm will be the eighth storm to hit the city this year and has already intensified to severe tropical storm.
The storm was 1,280 kilometers away from Shenzhen and entered China’s area of responsibility last night. The tropical storm Nock-ten has already passed through the Philippines causing damage to rice and coconut farms in the central and southern part of the country.
The storm will reach a maximum wind speed of 90 kilometers an hour, and will be bringing torrential rain to Shenzhen, Guangdong and Hainan provinces. During the past week temperatures in the city reached 36 degrees Celsius and 15 people were treated for heat stroke. Last Tuesday cities and counties in Guangdong issued high temperature alerts with temperatures in some areas ranging from 34 to 37 degrees Celsius.
Shenzhen Emergency center has received 500 calls since July, with most of the calls being complaints of feeling unwell and 15 of those were calls regarding heat stroke. Hospital visits also increased by 30 percent. To prevent heat stroke, people that are working outdoors are advised to find shelter from 10 am to 2 pm when the sun is at its hottest.
