Dr. Bernhard Wessling (老卫) presented his photos in Backstube near Rose Garden Phase Two last week. For those that weren’t able to attend, we have several photos below. Click through to see the full collection.

The exhibit featured 54 of thousands of photos taken over the past six years in Shenzhen as well as several featured in his book, Here I am Lao Wei, which has 140 photos taken by Dr. Wessling.

  1. Already during the first week the exhibition has drawn many people, Chinese and expats alike, quite a few just passing by and got attracted by the display of the vivid picture of the Chinese fisherwoman at street level of the gallery, but most of the visitors came because they have read or did hear about Dr. Wessling’s book ‘Here I am LaoWei’.

I went to see the exhibition over the weekend with my family. We had seen all of the photos already in the book, but we were not prepared for the impression the pictures made on us in big format, some of them enlarged to 180 x 120 cm and in beautiful detail, excellent print quality and in crisp resolution. None of the original light effects, obviously intended by the photographer, got lost in reproduction and one almost expects the people displayed in the photos (Dr. Wessling is a good people-photographer) to start to move and talk.

Many of the pictures certainly qualify for display and decoration in apartments and offices. I’m looking forward to make my selection and get the copies. They show scenes from real-life Shenzhen, scenes we pass by every day and never notice while following our busy schedule.

If you are in the neighborhood or have some spare time I encourage you to come by and spent some time and see the photos in the relaxed atmosphere of the ‘SZX Gallery’.
