Universiade Torch Relay Led by Residents and Migrant Workers
The 14 kilometer relay route also covered landmarks like Binhai Boulevard, Mangrove Nature Reserve and the memorial park shows Shenzhen’s 30-year reform plus the opening of Lianhua Hill Park. The first torchbearer was an outstanding volunteer and received the torch that was lit by Shenzhen’s vice mayor Zhang Wen at Haiyun Bay and ran the first 80 meters before passing the torch.
The first torchbearer Sun Ying, was happy to learn that she was chosen to be the first torchbearer. Sun has taught in the mountainous areas in Guizhou Province and has long been dedicated to voluntary teaching in remote, underdeveloped areas of the province. Other torchbearers were migrant workers and some were celebrities and considered their part in the relay as a rare opportunity for them to do something for their city.
The relay will continue in Longgang district this Thursday, the day before the official opening of the Universiade games with participants and representatives from around 60 countries in attendance.
