Online Torch Relay Ends Today
From the 160 torchbearers that played a major role in the torch relay in Longgang district, 60 percent were students from home and abroad including 42 foreigners. The Relay started at Longcheng Square and went around the Central Business District, Universiade Sports Center and Universiade Village.
Today also marked the end of the online torch relay that attracted more than ten million netizens, composed mainly of university students that were showing their support for the organizers’ plans for an economical and green Universiade.
The torch relay started on May 4 at Beijing University, May 10 at Shenzhen University, and on May 15 at the Guangzhou University Town. The torch relay was originally planned to be held in 50 universities in China with around 3,000 torchbearers ranging from students to celebrities. The Universiade Executive Office had set aside 80 million yuan as their budget for the torch relay.
The office changed the plan to coincide with the theme of a green and economical Universiade by having a virtual torch relay instead which covered almost 90 percent of the Chinese Universities by August 11 at a cost of ten million yuan.
