Spring Cocoon to Feature the Gate of World
The Shenzhen Bay Sports Center, or Spring Cocoon, will be the most distinctive element in the opening and closing ceremonies of the Universiade games. The Spring Cocoon will be seen throughout the world when the Summer Universiade opens tonight.
The two hour ceremony will consist of the introductions of the athletes, swearing in by the athletes ans officials and flag raising. There will also be cultural performances with performers inviting the athletes to join the festivities on stage. Another highlight of the ceremony is the Gate of World which provides the perfect view for the audiences to see and enjoy the performances.
The athletes will march through the gates and offers the sea and view of the Hong Kong cityscape from a distance. The Spring Cocoon is the only stadium in China that is located near the sea. Those who have experience the opening ceremonies of the Beijing and Guangzhou Asian Games will find that the Opening ceremony in Shenzhen will be different and unique. In coordination with the theme of “green” Universiade, the spectators will be thrilled by the exhibition of a new technology using color laser projections and line screen images.
The Spring Cocoon covers an area of 330,000 square meters and has become a new landmark in the Shenzhen Bay area. The construction is of modern engineering with the main body of the project integrated a stadium, natatorium and gymnasium that only took 21 months to finish. Initially made to be a standby venue were athletes can train and do warmups for the games, the center ended up as the venue for the opening ceremony and other competitions as well.
