Aircraft Carrier Returns to Port After Successful Maiden Voyage
China’s first aircraft carrier returned to port after its successful maiden sea trial. The carrier known as Varyag broke through the thick fog around 10:30 am and was towed by seven tugboats towards the Dalian Shipbuilding Industry that refitted the ship.
The carrier sounded its horn three times and naval officers were seen walking about the ship’s deck. People were waiting in the docks and lit firecrackers that welcomed the returning carrier. Another ship bearing a hull number 88 docked near the carrier an hour later.
The carrier’s sea trial sparked online jubilation among Chinese military enthusiasts that have been closely monitoring the refitting of the ship from start to finish and even sharing information and photos or any knowledge they have on the ship on Websites. The carrier is said to be turned over to the People’s Liberation Army by August of next year to coincide with the PLA’s 85th anniversary.
