Universiade Village Offers Athletes a Cultural Experience Area
Most of the athletes participating in the Universiade games are in China for the first time, so what better thing to do after training than visit the cultural experience area in the Universiade village and learn something new about Chinese culture and make friends at the same time.
Numerous traditional Chinese handicrafts are demonstrated in the village, like seal cuttings, silhouettes, fish skin paintings, embroidery and shadow plays. One athlete was amazed how fast a craftsman made a silhouette of her, she also said although she learned something about the culture from her parents, it was her first time to experience the culture up close.
Crafts demonstrators said most of the visitors were amazed at how rich the Chinese culture is and a lot of them tried their hand at doing silhouettes, wood block paintings of themselves to bring back home as souvenirs. Members from the Shaolin Temple martial arts school in Songhan were also at the cultural are to perform Chinese boxing and qigong in front of visitors.
