Restaurant Review – Chicken and Beer
Chicken and Beer is located at the new mall in Dōnɡ Hǎi Huā Yuán, take Exit A at Che Gong Miao metro and head toward the Merchant Bank tower building, turn right and walk until you come to McDonalds and turn left just before McDonalds and you will see Chicken and Beer behind the shopping plaza. With a name like chicken and beer I was expecting Nandos style chicken and ice cold buckets of beer with draught pumps on the bar.
It wasn’t quite like this. I entered into a very smart modern restaurant, seating was comfortable and there were lots of waitresses on hand to seat you and take your order. Looking through the beer menu there are a small selection of bottled beers, Carlsberg, corona, Heineken and Tsingtao. I went for the Asahi on draught very reasonably priced at 20rmb for 500ml. So far so good, the beer was cold. I ordered several dishes from the menu including a Mexican salad, a spicy pasta dish, several flavours of grilled chicken and some chicken legs.
The spicy pasta came first and was delicious and certainly had enough spice as it burnt my lips and made me drink my Asahi a little quicker. Next came the Mexican salad, I have to say this is where things started to go down hill a little. On the menu I could clearly see peppers and onions and chicken on the picture. In front of me was a fruit salad exactly the same as the one you get for free in Raindrops café. I queried this with the waitress and she assured me it was a Mexican salad. Not being Mexican, I didn’t argue and decided instead to Google it when I returned home and sure enough, Mexican salads have beans, onions, peppers, lime, olive oil, etc etc. Any Mexican would certainly feel insulted to be served a fruit salad instead I am sure.
Next came the chicken legs, 42rmb for two which initially looked reasonable. In front of me were two legs of chicken similar to the ones you might buy in the 7 eleven in packets and stick in the microwave for maybe 8rmb each. Having eaten the 7 eleven variety many times after a night out, I noted the taste was also identical. The grilled chicken came next and was the same as the 7 eleven chicken sold hot as fast food for maybe 4rmb per piece. This was certainly not Nandos or roasters.
To summarize, the staff were friendly, warm and eager to practice their English. All customers are given vouchers for discounts next time and we were given VIP cards offering us further discounts. The beer was cold and well priced. Unfortunately the main ingredient in a restaurant is the food and this was a let down. I will return for a pint because the atmosphere was nice and friendly and I will try one of the pizzas which I didn’t have room to try last night and from 48rmb per pizza hopefully you can’t go too far wrong.
You can also order take away chicken and pizza on 2600-3887.
