More Measures Planned to Help Control Traffic Congestion
The city transport commission is working on measures that will control the rapidly increasing number of vehicles that are being registered in the city. So far the number of registered vehicles in Shenzhen have already reached 1.7 million, not including the 300,000 vehicles that have been registered outside of Shenzhen.
A proposal letter made by lawmakers to help control traffic congestion, emphasized steps that will control the number of private cars on the roads. The lawmakers also pointed out that there is already an existing control that requires vehicles to meet certain emission standards. The city will also impose stricter management of vehicles coming from outside of Shenzhen. These vehicles must apply for green or yellow labels and public utility vehicles outside Shenzhen will be able to run on designated roads only.
There is also the possibility of charging high emission vehicles for environmental protection fees that will help to solve the parking problem. Because of the high number of vehicles on the roads, 200,000 cars and 6,000 buses have nowhere to park during the night. The environment protection fees will help finance the construction of car parks, redevelopment of existing car parks in residential areas and the introduction of vertical mechanical parking.
