City Steps up Drive to Become a Model Low Carbon City
The city is now planning to boost efforts to become a model low carbon city by establishing four low carbon zones and issuing plans to build a carbon exchange center. A plan unveiled by the city urban planning, land and resources commission showed the necessary steps the government is making from 2011 to 2015.
The steps will ensure the city’s attempt to become a leading city in the nationwide low carbon drive. to create a base for a low carbon headquarters, the city has chosen four low carbon ecological zones covering Guangming, Qianhai, Pingshan and Dapeng Peninsula. Once set up, an environmental exchange will be established for carbon trading.
By 2015, 15 percent of non fossil fuels will make up the city’s total energy consumption, which is higher than the 11 percent goal that was set by the State. To further achieve this goal the city will be installing solar water heaters in all residential buildings lower than 12 floors. Eighteen water recycling projects will be constructed to increase the use of reclaimed water up to 50 percent, also by 2015.
