Students as Learners of Language

Students as Learners of LanguageA recurring topic of professional conversations at SIS is about students as learners of language.  In the information rich world of today, skillful use of language is critical.

There are many languages spoken by SIS students at home  and for some students there may be more than one.  For those who speak a language other than English at home, they are learners of the home language and of English.  Others who speak English at home may only be  developing  skills in one language as a home language and Chinese or French as another language.  But all students are learning to use language to better understand the world around them and effectively communicate about it with others.

It is important to involve parents in what is being done at school to support language learning and to talk about what can be done at home. Several events organized by SIS teachers during the year create opportunities for that involvement.

Last night, the elementary classroom teachers hosted the K-5 Curriculum Night. They offered a variety of workshops with activities for parents and children to do at home to support learning.  Among the workshops were those focused on language development including reading, writing and vocabulary.  Again, it was emphasized that all children are learners of language.

Early in the year, our ESOL teachers hosted an Information Meeting.  They presented a thorough explanation of the program at SIS followed by small groups focused on specific issues and ways for parents to help their children.  The feedback from participants was enthusiastic.  Many specifically appreciated hearing an emphasis on the continued development of the home language.
