Migrant Workers Top the List as Organ Donors
Since 2009, 61 people have donated their organs after their death. Most of the donors were migrant workers that has died from hemorrhage, brain damage and other injuries caused by car accidents as reported by the city’s Red Cross Association.
Other cities such as Dongguan and Guangzhou also reported that most of their organ donations were coming from migrant workers as well. Most donations are decided when families give up on treatment or if there is no hope for the survival of the patient. After discussions about donating organs, the family would then agree to donate them knowing that they can save someone elses life.
Regulations require the Red Cross Association to pay compensations to the donor, but most of the donor patient families refuse to accept any compensation with most saying to give the money to other families that are living harder lives. The Red Cross Association also hopes to further educate people to support organ donations and raise social awareness.
The Association will also ask for government assistance to simplify the process of donation.
