Yao Ming to Bring Californian Wine to China
Yao Ming became China’s first global sports superstar to enter into a new venture after retiring from the NBA. Yao recently bought a wine company in Napa Valley that will carry the name Yao Family Wines.
The wine company will release its first wine bearing Yao’s Label, which is a 2009 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. There will only be 5,000 cases available in mainland China, priced at $289 a bottle. The label will be available in the United States by 2012 and said to cost $170 a bottle.
The wine will cost less in the United States as there are no import fees, unlike in China where import fees have grown in interest over the decade. Yao said that playing basketball gave him the opportunity to live in the United States and he discovered many great things in America. Yao is looking forward to bringing great wines back to the Chinese people.
Yao retired from the NBA earlier this year due to chronic foot injuries and is now living in Shanghai.
