Grade 7 Week Without Walls: Conghua Scenery, Potatoes & Dumplings
It is amazing how time flies! It is hard to believe that it was one month ago that the Grade 7s left SIS by bus to Conghua. Conghua, located in the northeast suburbs of Guangzhou, is locally known as one of the 12 most beautiful villages in Guangdong.
Upon arrival we quickly unpacked and headed out on a trek to see why Conghua had developed its reputation. We were not disappointed, as our trek led us past clean green rivers and bamboo forests to the peaceful village of Guitan.
After a good night’s rest and a hearty breakfast it was time to learn about each other through a variety of team games and challenges. We also learned how to shake hands like a fisherman, a lumberjack, and my personal favourite, like a milkman.
During the day we also found a little time to relax and have a swim at a crystal clear but very cool natural plunge pool. By the end of the day we were fairly exhausted and looking forward to a good night’s sleep in preparation for our service learning work in Xianniangxi.
We traveled by bus the next morning to Xianniangxi, a traditional village not far from Guitan. By the 10am the skies were blue, and it was starting to get very warm! It was going to be a challenging day but knowing that we were going to help this community lifted our spirits.
We set about our task of digging up fields of sweet potatoes by hand! Little did we know that we would be rewarded with the fruits of our labour later that evening for dinner.
However, a meal consisting of just potatoes would not be that inspiring after a hard day’s work. So after a well earned shower we set about making some dumplings to complement our meal.
It was an enjoyable and meaningful experience that taught us a great deal. It was one learning experience that will remain in our memories for a long time.
