Residents Can Now Start Using Mobile Phones at Checkout
Consumers can now use their mobile phones when paying for things they buy at shopping centers or while dining in restaurants if the amount is under a thousand yuan. There are currently 25,000 POS terminals with installed software that will support mobile payment and 20 commercial venues have already begun using the system
The payment software service has been developed by China Telecom and China Unionpay that combines a bank card IC chip and a mobile SIM card. By using China Telecom’s HICDMA mobile phones, users can pay by placing the phones directly onto the POS terminals at convenience stores, cinemas and fast food chains. Users need to register for the payment services at any branch of China Telecom by presenting their ID cards.
When using their mobile phones to pay, customers needn’t input a password, the payment is done as soon as the mobile phone touches the POS terminals, making it much faster and more convenient than paying using a bank card. The maximum payment that is allowed has been set at 1,000 yuan to decrease the chances of having mobile phones stolen and used by other people.
