District Residents can Avail Free Service Starting Next YearStarting January 1, 2012 both hukou and non-hukou holders can receive free basic funeral services if they are living in Bao’an district. According to a reform funeral service policy recently approved by district residents that pass away starting January 1, 2012.

The district government is setting aside 4.5 million yuan a year to cover the basic services offered such as transportation of the remains and storing the deceased remains up to three days, basic ceremony, cremation and a ten year cinerary deposit. The five basic services usually cost 1,550 yuan.

Several groups such as the disabled, military soldiers, retired officials and labor award winners can avail of an additional two free services such as a free coffin an a regular cinerary casket. Bao’an is the first district to offer such service and the policy will start covering additional districts in the future. The municipal government will also offer flowers, coffins, urns and other funeral products at reasonable prices to ensure fair pricing.
