Have You Filled a Bucket Today?
In second grade, we have been working hard to be “bucket fillers.” What does this mean? Bucket filling is based on the book, “Have You Filled A Bucket Today? (A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids)” by Carol McCloud.
The premise of the book is this: we all carry an invisible bucket that contains our feelings. When our bucket is full, we feel great. When our bucket is empty, we feel sad. A bucket filler is someone who does or says nice things for other people. By doing this, they are filling other people’s buckets and filling their own bucket at the same time.
On the other hand, a bucket dipper says or does things to cause others to feel bad. A bucket dipper empties their bucket when they say and do mean things.
Anytime during the day when second grade students have free time, they are allowed to “fill buckets.” Each student has their own bucket. Students write a positive note to other classmates. Students also understand that there are ways to fill buckets without writing notes. We can fill buckets through our actions.
With the holiday season fast approaching, it is important for us all to remember to fill buckets for others.
When asked about “bucket filling” here is what some of the second graders had to say:
“Bucket filling is when you help or say hello every morning and then if someone’s hurt, you can help him or her… and that’s filling their bucket.”
“Ways to fill buckets are like if I’m helpful to you, you can say thank you to me, or if I am helpful to them, then they can write me a note.”
“Bucket filling is helping people if their hurt, saying hello to people, and respecting others.”
You may wish to use the idea of bucket filling at home by identifying bucket filling acts with your family. Some ways include:
-Standing up for each other
-Being kind and caring
-Asking, How are you doing? or How is your day?
-Helping others if they are sad, hurt, or need assistance.
