Two More Tollgates to Stop Charging Fees
The city closure of two more tollgates marked the success of its ten-year plan to end tunnel fees and tollgate charges. The Shuitian tollgate on Songhai Road and the Matian tollgate in Shiguan Road were the last tollgates on second level provincial roads to put an end to the fees. The two tollgates will now be dismantled.
An average of 35,000 drivers will benefit from the scrapped toll charges. The tollgates were criticized long after the tunnel tollgate at Wutong Mountain and eight other tollgates that border Hiuzhou and Dongguan were closed last March. The city then began negotiations with the tollgate operators in hopes of relieve traffic congestion, improving the investment environment and promoting the integration of special economic zones.
Since the launch of the tollgate reform in 2002, the city has closed eighteen tollgates on its urban roads.
