Christmas At The Grand Mercure Hotel
I spent Christmas with my wife in the Grand Mercure Oriental Ginza Hotel at Zu Zi Lin. The General manager upgraded us to a suite after hearing we had tied the knot the day before which was a lovely gesture and when we arrived in our room we were greeted by chocolates to mark the occasion. The Grand Mercure was recently awarded 5-star status and my impressions over the weekend were that it is a status they deserve.
The Grand Mercure were holding a Christmas eve Gala dinner buffet with performers, I had forgotten to book a table and was feeling pretty down when reception told me the dinner was sold out, fortunately the restaurant manager Pang was on hand and seeing the gloom in my face said he would try to accommodate us.
We went off to freshen up in our huge room, relaxing on the sofa looking at the bay view from our suite then trying out the bath followed by a nap in the king-size bed. Dinner time arrived and we checked to see if Pang had been able to fit us in, he greeted us with a beaming smile which told me we were in luck and he escorted us to a table near the stage where people would be singing, dancing and playing magic tricks.
The evening was wonderful, the food amazing with dishes from all over the world including my Christmas favorites, gammon steak and stuffed turkey. Entertainment was nice and geared toward family which it should be this time of the year. Staff were on hand to make sure the evening was a wonderful Christmas experience for everybody.
In the morning I woke early to use the gym, for a hotel it is the best gym I have trained in with all the equipment you would need for a full work out. The pool was heated and a great way to relax after working out followed by an even more relaxing sauna. Next time I stay I will have to try the Kenzo Teppanyaki restaurant of the 25th floor and the sports bar on the 7th floor. I also hear the Chinese restaurant on the 3rd floor serves the best Peking duck around. In the summer there is a lovely outdoor BBQ restaurant.
