City Sees Increase in Rent After Spring Festival Holidays
With the end of the Spring Festival bringing in a wave of new migrant workers to the city to find work, though not as many as employers might like, apartments in urban villages have increased their rents, especially in the Gangxia and Baishizhou communities and villages with high migrant populations.
The cost of renting an average one bedroom apartment has risen from 900 yuan a month to 1,200 yuan a month. One company that rents an apartment for their employees for 2,500 yuan a month had to add 500 yuan after the holidays. In Baishizhou, renting a 20 square meter room that used to cost 500 yuan a month to rent is now at 700 yuan a month. Although certain areas have increased their rents, places with few migrant workers rent remained unchanged.
Even with rising costs, apartments for rent are still in demand. One apartment owner said that she is constantly being called up to be asked if there is a vacancy in one of her apartments. Some tenants opted to share the apartments with other possible tenants to share the costs of the increased rent and save a little money in the process.
