Transport Commission Still to Decide on Fuel Surcharges
The transport commission said that the city will not impose an increase in fuel surcharges that is imposed on local taxi passengers that needs to pay a 3 yuan fuel surcharge for every time they ride a taxi. These remarks were made after local taxi driver were complaining on the pressure caused by a hike in gasoline prices.
Starting Wednesday the price for a No. 93 gasoline is now at 7.89 yuan a liter, showing a price increase of .24 yuan a liter. A taxi driver now have to pay an additional 360 yuan a month if his daily consumption is around 50 liters. Because of this, drivers are hoping that the city government will subsidize the taxi industry before any more increase in fuel surcharges will happen.
Before the city government was providing subsidies to taxi drivers in line with the constant rise in operation costs but was stop last year. Experts are saying that it’s unfair to force the government to fully shoulder the additional cost of gasoline surcharges. Giving out subsidies can’t be decided by the city’s transport commission since it concerns other government departments as well.
Although taxi companies and their drivers can bear the new prices of gasoline, taxi companies have yet to adjust the monthly rents imposed to drivers.
