New Regulations Drafted on the Use of Electric Bicycles on City Roads
In a newly drafted regulations yesterday, the city will be banning electric bicycles from using, major roads, urban trunk roads and terminals in central business areas in every district and in new zones. Yanhe Road, Nigang Road, Buxin Road, Beihuan, Binhe, Binhai Boulevards, and the flyover in Chunfeng road are also part of the restricted roads.
And from April until June, electric bicycles are restricted from using Sungang Road and Shennan Boulevard. Industries such as postal and delivery services will not be included in the restrictions, but traffic police will be drafting a different ruling on how the industries use their bicycles on the road.
There are around 200,000 electric bicycles that are in use in the city, around 80 percent of these bicycles have exceeded the national standards for speed and weight which is one of the major causes of traffic accidents. In 2011, the city reported 34 injuries and 22 cases of death from electric bicycle accidents. Since electric bicycles are not licensed or registered, drivers tend to flee the area of the accident leaving victims to tend on their own.
70 percent of the city residents are supporting the restrictions on electric bicycles, and residents are also encouraged to give more suggestions for the restrictions by visiting the traffic police bureau on Lianhua Road.
