Magnitude 4.2 Earthquake Hits Guangdong

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck Guangdong this morning at 2:34 AM local time, approximately 190Km North East of Shenzhen, according to the USGS . While not everyone has reported feeling the quake, most likely due to their being asleep when it struck and being of a comparatively low magnitude, many in the city reported feeling as though the building were moving beneath them and furniture moving around in their homes.

This is not the first time that a quake has been felt in the city. Shenzhen was affected by another earthquake in November, 2010 that caused a bit more of a stir, with many in office buildings noticing the ground shifting beneath their feet and the sway of the buildings as they absorbed the tremor. While that quake was closer to Shenzhen, it was half as powerful as this most recent tremor, at 2.8 on the Richter scale and several kilometers deeper.

  1. Felt nothing. We live on landfill (not good in earthquakes!) on Shenzhen Bay and would love it if you researched and published an article on the history and likelihood of earthquakes here.

  2. I was up at 2:30 and felt it. Heard the handles on the dresser rattle a little, and the window frames creak. Like james says, it was just a little wobble.

  3. Nope didn’t feel a thing! My mattress is thick :)

  4. Yes, my husband and I felt the bed rattle for a few seconds at about 2.30 a.m.(HK Gold Coast). Wonder if the predictions about many more natural calamities will occur before Dec 21, 2012 !!

  5. I was doing work at the time, and suddenly my body waved back and forth. I thought it was just me at first but then the chandelier was also swinging. Kinda freaky it was!

  6. I am living here, working at that time until 5 am , and nothing at all.. no feeling..

  7. yes i felt it, i was staying up to watch the football, and it was like a giant shook the building, only a quick wobble, but a considerable wobble. quite freaky, would not like to be in that for a couple of minutes or more.

  8. Wow that’s crazy! I didn’t feel it.
